Our Chairman Races to the Stones

10 Jul 2022

Gary King, Jake Stuart, Mike Unwin and Matt & Kerry Clamp ran the Race to the Stones

The Race to the Stones is an ultra marathon worthy of appearing any serious athlete's bucket list. The event gives participants the choice of a 50km ultra, a 100km ultra or 2x 50km ultras over 2 days along the oldest road in Great Britain; The Ridgeway between Lewknor in Buckinghamshire and Avebury in Wiltshire finishing by the neolithic Avebury Stone Circle.

WTC Chairman Gary King had unfinished business with the event after having to withdraw at 60km in 2022, and has spent the past few months training both his body and digestive system to ensure he could fuel properly throughout the 100km race.

The day was a scorcher, with temperatures into the high 20's and very little shade on the course. However, going into the event, Gary was feeling confident and I'm pleased to report, he completed the event in 18 hours 15 mins and 56 seconds.

Joining Gary from Wallingford Triathlon Club were Jake Patterson and Mike Unwin. Jake finished in an impressive time of about 14 hours (official time to be confirmed)

Despite running strongly for much of the day, unfortunately Mike was suffering from significant cramps and heat stroke and bowed out at 83km - no mean feat on such a hot day.

Matt and Kerry Clamp took on the 50km race and both finished together in impressive style, with Kerry finishing as the 3rd female veteran.

Smashing effort guys. Well done!!!
